Expansion of Telehealth in Massachusetts

On March 15, 2020, Governor Baker signed an Order Expanding Access to Telehealth Services and to Protect Health Care Providers.  The Order contains several important rights that benefit providers and patients alike.

For providers, the Order enables services to be administered to patients via telehealth platforms and sets out a framework for insurers to pay for these services.  The Order thus makes it easier for providers to continue to work safely during the outbreak of COVID-19, while also protecting providers’ ability to get paid for their services by insurers.  Providers should contact any insurer with whom the provider is under contract to discuss providing telehealth services.

For patients, the Order enables them to continue treating with their providers while limiting their potential exposure to COVID-19 through travel, social contacts, etc.  The Order recognizes that continued access to medical care, for concerns related and unrelated to COVID-19, is an essential part of life in the Commonwealth and makes this access easier and safer for patients.  Patients should contact their providers to discuss the availability of telehealth services.
